Investment Management
Our investment process is based on award-winning market research. Historically, owning businesses through the stock market and private ownership has been an excellent way to build wealth and produce income. We pull from the best parts of active and passive investment management to create portfolios that give investors a greater chance of long-term investment success.
As investors, we know it is essential to understand what is within our control and what is not. Two of the most important considerations that an investor can control are the impact of taxes and investment costs on the returns of their portfolios. We consider both throughout our investment process. Our portfolios are developed by Cogent Private Wealth’s investment committee, with consultation from the fund managers whose investments we select. In addition, based on a client’s needs, we may recommend alternative investments like private equity and private real estate for additional growth and diversification opportunities. As a fee-only advisor, we are never compensated for the investments that we utilize for clients.
We do not believe that anyone can repeatedly predict the best time to enter or exit the stock market. The tax consequences from unnecessarily selling investments and the impact of missing even the best single-day returns can cause significant harm to portfolio values and investment returns. Therefore, the best portfolio for any investor is the one that fits their risk tolerance and that they will remain invested in throughout the market’s many ups and downs.

“The first rule of compounding is to never interrupt it unnecessarily.”
-Charlie Munger
